Our insider tips will guide you through planning the perfect Inti Raymi adventure. Thanks to our dedicated team based in Cusco and our experience hosting international travelers, we can offer you the latest updates on this extraordinary event.
1. Inti Raymi Festival's Popularity & Availability
As the grandest celebration of the Incan Empire, Inti Raymi was originally held during the winter solstice, marking the Incan New Year and honoring the Sun God, Inti. This pivotal event was tragically suppressed by Spanish colonial rule but later triumphantly revived. Today, Inti Raymi is a vibrant tapestry woven from ancient customs, serving as a cornerstone of local identity that attracts at the same time a global audience.
It is estimated that approximately 45,000 visitors traveled to Cusco to experience the 2024 edition of Inti Raymi.
To ensure a seamless experience, plan your Inti Raymi adventure well in advance. Due to overwhelming demand, many Cusco hotels require a minimum two-night stay. Secure your spot by purchasing tickets as soon as they go on sale, usually two months before the festival.

On June 24th, the Inca and their entourage perform at 3 key locations in Cusco:
Location
Ticket required
Duration
1. Koricancha Cusco (Sun Temple)
Yes, since 2024
~ 45 min - 1 hour
2. Cusco's main square
No
~ 1 - 1,5 hours
3. Sacsayhuaman Fortress (10-drive from Cusco)
Yes
~ 4 hrs *
* Despite the authorities announcing a shorter duration for the Inti Raymi 2024 performance at Sacsayhuaman Fortress, the event still ended up lasting 4 hours.
Location #1 - Korikancha
Starting time: 9:00 am
Description: Koricancha, once the revered Temple of the Sun during Incan times, later became the foundation for a church built by the Spaniards during the colonial era. Every year, the ceremony begins at this historically significant site, where the Inca and the Imperial Entourage pay homage to the Sun God, Inti.
Good to know: This first act was traditionally free and accessible to everyone. However, starting in 2024, there is now a paid seating option in one category. While you can still attend without a ticket, the visibility from the free areas is significantly compromised.
Location #2 - Cusco's main square
Starting time: 10:30 am
Description: This site hosts the 'Meeting of the Times', where the Inca entrusts the Mayor of Cusco with the sacred Qhipu, symbolizing administrative responsibility.
Good to know: Although tickets are not required, people will stand for hours to secure a good view of the festivities.
Location #3 - Sacsayhuaman
Starting time: 13:00 -14:00 hrs
Description: The ceremony's main event begins with the grand entrance of the Coya, the Inca's consort, followed by the Inca himself, setting the stage for various sacred rites. In the past, the ritual included the sacrifice of a llama, but today, fortunately, this practice has been replaced with a symbolic representation. The festival is brought to life by approximately 900 artists who perform traditional dances, music, and a reenactment of the historical ceremonies of the Inca Empire, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Andean people.
3. Where can I buy tickets?
To attend Inti Raymi, we recommend securing your tickets early due to high demand.
The organizer of the event (EMUFEC) normally starts selling tickets in April.
Since 2024, they have started selling tickets online, instead of only at their office as in previous years.
No personal data is required to buy a ticket, but bear in mind that Inti Raymi tickets are non-refundable.
In 2024, a total of 3,750 tickets were made available for the main event at Sacsayhuaman
350 tickets were sold for the starting act at Koricancha
4. Which is the best ticket category?
There is only one type of ticket available for this area at Korikancha (~ USD 45 as of 2024)
Sacsayhuaman, on the other hand, offers three ticket categories:
Ticket Category
Price 2024
Location
Tickets Available
Green
USD 120
On the sides of the ceremony
~ 750
Orange
USD 180
Directly in front of the ceremony & Sacsayhuaman Fortress (best views)
~ 1875
Red
USD 170
On the sides of the ceremony
~ 1125
As a result, the orange category is the most popular and tends to sell out first. The photos below show the positioning of the categories.
It is also possible to buy combined tickets with access to Korikancha as well as one of the categories of Sacsayhuaman. Pricing starts at around 160 USD with the green category.

6. Additional tips to enjoy Inti Raymi the most
Spend the night prior to Inti Raymi in Cusco to have a relaxed breakfast on festival day.
We recommend arranging a boxed lunch in advance to enjoy at Sacsayhuaman (this part of the festival can take around 4 hours so you will definitely get peckish)
We advise against walking to and from Sacsayhuaman due to the large crowds and resulting pedestrian traffic on this day.
Don't forget to pack:
Enough water (portaloo toilets available at Sacsayhuaman Fortress)
Sun protection (sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen)
Comfortable shoes
Make sure to arrive early at all three sites
If possible, spend a few days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before Inti Raymi to acclimate and fully enjoy the festival.
