Tambopata Research Center

TRC is one of the most remote rainforest lodges in the Tambopata Reserve. The lodge is rustic, yet, has modern amenities with comfortable beds, en-suite bathroom as well as mosquito nets. It is only accessible by means of a combination of road and river travel. Your 1-hour journey along the road begins at the airport. Once in Filadelfia you board a boat for the remaining 2.5-hour river journey on the Tambopata River.

There are four room categories, namely: Superior (8), Comfort (8), Suite (4) and Deluxe Suite (4). Ample space is available in the upper room categories (Suite and Deluxe Suite). The only difference between these last two is the outdoor terrace including bathtub and a second shower that is only featured in the Deluxe Suites (see our video in the gallery below).

You will be given the feeling that you are staying inside the middle of the rainforest with the main ‘window’ in the rooms being completely open to the outside world.

Due to its remoteness TRC is also one of the best places to enjoy the diversity of wildlife in the Amazon rainforest (monkeys, capybaras, birds and if you are lucky, a real-life jaguar!). The lodge also features one of South America's largest macaw clay licks. The so-called 'collpa' is located only 300m from the lodge itself and boasts a vivid array of six species of macaws and eleven species of parrots and parakeets. The colors that can be seen and the noises that can be heard are truly out of this world, be sure to bring a camera along for this one.

We spent a few nights at this incredible lodge together with our son and we can not recommend it enough to anyone that wants to truly experience the majesty of the Amazon, we were even so lucky as to get to see a jaguar on our last day there which really put the cherry on the top of our experience in Peru's rainforest.

Our Tips

  • Weather has become unpredictable in the rainforest as well, activity in the Macaw Clay Lick cant be guaranteed. We recommend a stay of at least 3 nights in order to increase chances to spot macaws (activity at the lick begins early in the morning, which allows a visit only on day 2 and 3).
  • Cold fronts from the Atlantic (known as ‘friajes’) are likely in July and August. Dressing in layers is key.
  • The ‘superior rooms’ are located in the main building. Those rooms didn’t an en-suite bathroom in the past but thanks to the recent addition of one in each, it is the most affordable option, although they offer very limited space.
  • We tried the ‘deluxe suites’ and given the price difference between this and the ‘suites’ we recommend opting for the first option. You will be able to enjoy your own private terrace with an open-air bathtub that invites you to disconnect while enjoying the sounds of the rainforest, as the sun sets with a glass of wine after a day full of activities.
  • Even though the macaw lick is one of the largest in Peru, you will still need a telephoto lens to capture the macaws at the lick and for photographing the wildlife in general.
