Welcome to Easter Island or 'Rapa Nui'. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
Begin your exploration of Easter Island by visiting Ahu Akivi, a big platform with seven moais that gaze out to sea. Unlike all the other moais on the island, which face inland, the statues at Ahu Akivi were built in honor of the seven explorers sent by King Hotu Matua to discover the island. From there, head to the unrestored Ahu Hanga Poukura and then to the Puna Pau quarry, where the top part of the moais was sculpted. Here, you can see the Pukao, or typical hairstyle, that adorned the heads of the more recent moais, representing the chieftains' topknot. Your tour also includes a visit to the ceremonial site of Tahai, which features three restored ahu platforms. One of these displays five restored moais, while another features a huge statue with a red 10-ton topknot and restored eyes, offering a glimpse of what the moais looked like in the past.
After exploring Ahu Tahai, a short walk from Hanga Roa, the island's town, head to the well-organized Sebastian Englert Museum, which boasts an excellent collection of artifacts and a scale model of the island. Your guide can also help you appreciate the Catholic Church on Hanga Roa's main street, notable for its woodcarvings that display religious syncretism. The churchyard includes the graves of Sebastian Englert, the German priest who studied and disseminated the language, traditions, and archaeological heritage of Rapa Nui, and Eugene Eyraud, the first missionary to arrive on the island.
Your day tour begins with a visit to Vaihu and Akahanga, where a total of 20 fallen moai statues can be seen. Ahu Akahanga is said to be the burial site of the island's first ruler, Hotu Matua. Next, head to Rano Raraku, one of two major quarry sites on the island, where all the moais were sculpted. The stone-faced giants lie in various states of production, with some half-carved and others abandoned in mid-transport. Your next stop is at Ahu Tongariki, the largest stone platform, where 15 majestic moais stand against the barren landscape. The Ahu next to Te Pito Kura also boasts the largest moai (Paro), standing 9.8 meters tall, ever erected on an Ahu. Afterward, you can take a refreshing dip at Anakena, a white sand beach with historical significance as the disembarkation site of Hotu Matua, the first settler of the islands. The beach is also home to the Ahu Nao-Nao stones, a set of seven moais.
Spend the morning exploring the southwestern coast of Easter Island, beginning with Ranu Kau, the island's third-highest peak (at 324 meters/1063 feet). This extinct volcano features a large crater lake and offers a dramatic landscape with the Pacific Ocean as its backdrop. Just around the corner lies the ceremonial village of Orongo, where you can admire advanced stone masonry and panoramic ocean vistas. The annual "birdman" competitions took place here, with representatives from each of the tribes competing. About four kilometers northeast of Ranu Kao lies Vinapu, which includes one of the largest ahu platforms in Rapa.
In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Santiago and connect with your flight back home (flight not included).
