This 8-day journey in Argentina offers a diverse and exciting experience, taking you to off-the-beaten-track destinations such as Purmamarca, Salta, Cafayate, and Cachi, where you can explore the beautiful landscapes and taste exquisite wine. You will also visit the stunning national park Las Cordones and the capital city of Buenos Aires, where you can learn how to make delicious traditional asado.
Welcome to the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires. Upon arrival, you will be privately transferred to your hotel. (Early check-in not included).
This morning you will be transferred to the airport to take your flight to Salta (flight not included). Upon arrival, you will visit Quebrada de Huamahuaca en route to Purmamcarca where you will stay tonight.
Quebrada de Huamahuaca is a breathtaking mountain valley route that spans approximately 202 km (126 miles) and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its significance as a part of the Inca Trail.
Along the trail, you'll encounter charming Inca-influenced towns and villages, such as Humahuaca, Purmamarca, and Tilcara, that are scattered at various intervals. These towns and villages offer a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage and provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local traditions and customs.
After breakfast, you will visit Salinas Grandes, an impressive salt plain located in the Argentinean 'Puna' at approximately 3,300 m/10,800 ft. Stretching for approximately 212 km² (82 sq mi), a vast white desert awaits you. Salinas Grandes is impressive throughout the year, but it becomes even more spectacular when the summer rains replenish it from December through February. After enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Salinas Grandes, you will spend the night in Salta.
After having breakfast, you will begin your journey towards Cafayate. Your route will take you through the Natural Reserve of "Quebrada Conchas," where you can explore the stunning scenery. To get to Cafayate, you will need to head south from Salta, taking Route 68, which spans approximately 190 km (118 miles).
The moment you enter the Shell's Gorge (Quebrada de Las Conchas), you will be greeted by a breathtaking view that stretches for about 80 km (50 miles). The gorge used to be an ocean floor and is now a nature reserve that boasts a diverse array of rock formations. Many of these formations have been given names such as The Devil's Throat, The Amphitheater, The Frog, The Friar, and The Obelisk. You can easily spot them as they are signposted along the way.
In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to visit some local wineries and sample some of the exquisite wines that Argentina is famous for worldwide.
Finally, you will spend the night in Cafayate.
After breakfast, your next destination, Cachi, awaits you. Along the way, you will make a stop at ‘Bodega Colome’ for a wine tasting. The high altitude of the Calchaqui Valley and the significant temperature difference between day and night provides a longer growing season. This results in a more intense accumulation of flavors in the grapes, making for exceptional wine.
Located in the upper valley, ‘Bodega Colome’ is one of the world's highest vineyards and one of the oldest in Argentina (established in 1831). Its wines are exported to over 25 countries worldwide, focusing mainly on varieties of Malbec and Torrontés. In addition to being a renowned winery, ‘Bodega Colome’ is also home to the ‘Museum James Turrell,’ which showcases the work of one of the most important contemporary light and space artists.
After breakfast, you will embark on a half-day excursion to the National Park Los Cardones. The park is located alongside Route 33 from Salta to Cachi, across the Cuesta del Obispo, and is named after the giant cacti (‘cardon’). In the treeless Andean foothills and ‘puna’, the ‘cardon’ has long been an important source of timber for doors, windows, and other construction materials, and you will see it frequently used in the region's traditional buildings.
In this beautiful high-desert territory, you may be lucky enough to spot grey foxes, eagles, and condors. Remember to take plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun during your visit.
After this excursion, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires (flight is not included). Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel.
Experience Buenos Aires like a local with this amazing opportunity to have an authentic 'asado' experience at a private residence in the city. ‘Asado' is a cultural dining tradition that is passed down for generations and is the Argentine equivalent of a barbecue. During this fun outing, you will enjoy your 'asado' with friends in Palermo Viejo.
This is not your typical formal 'class', but rather a relaxed experience where you can learn, laugh, and share while enjoying a delicious Argentine meal made from fresh produce provided by local micro producers. Your guide will take you to the grocery store, bakery, and wine shop as you stroll through the charming, cobbled streets like a true local.
Once you arrive back at the house, you will work with your assigned master 'asador' to prepare the five-course barbecue menu. You will learn the secrets and customs of preparing meat and salads, lighting the fire with wood and charcoal, and also learn about the city from your new friends in a cozy and relaxing environment, all while sipping on a refreshing 'Fernandito' cocktail.
