Experience the Rainbow Mountain of Peru in a sustainable way with an overnight stay at an eco-lodge in Huampococha, which is closer to the starting point for the hike than Cusco city. Take a break from the daily hustle and bustle and appreciate the rugged beauty of the highlands, while also supporting two local communities and enjoying breathtaking views. This 2-day excursion is not your typical Rainbow Mountain day hike, as it offers an excellent opportunity for cultural exchange with both communities. Along the way, you will gain insight into their fascinating knowledge and cosmological perspective.
Your 2-day-journey to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) starts with a pick-up from Cusco in the morning. Escorted by your guide you cross through the Vilcanota Valley to the town of Checacupe. Hike through the spectacular canyon of Japura until you arrive at the community of Osefina, where we see the first grazing llamas and alpacas. Little by little you start ascending through a picturesque valley. As you leave the last houses behind, the landscape will change drastically on the way to the Anta pass and you will earn your first glimpse of the Vilcanota mountain range. You will spend the night in the Huampococha Lodge where you may get the opportunity to see Andean geese who usually nest close by.
